President Reuven Rivlin eulogized retired chief justice Meir Shamgar on Tuesday at a ceremony in the Supreme Court Plaza in Jerusalem, saying, "For my generation, Meir was a pioneer of excellence."
Rivlin also said, "In every role your work played was the architect's job: laying the foundations and setting patterns while constantly listening to the public interest and the changing reality. Even when you were elected judge and president of the Supreme Court, you continued to be an architect, the architect of Israeli law. You were dedicated to protecting human rights and the rule of law. You stressed the importance of balance and restraint between authorities. Balances aimed at preventing the formation of governmental superpower, through mutual supervision and control. Your judicial concept has repeatedly demonstrated your position and belief that there is no conflict between Jewish and democratic or between national and liberal."
