Ukrainian police investigators have opened 11 investigations into suspected violent antisemitic crimes between January and August, according to the Interfax news agency.
President Boris Lozhkin of the Jewish Confederation of Ukraine (KIA) said KIA representatives met in June with Interior Minister Arsene Abkov to discuss the issue of anti-Semitism in Ukraine and develop the means to fight it. Since then, he noted that the most serious crime being investigated by the police is the throwing of stones at a synagogue by a man who shouted curses against Jews and was arrested. In another case, residents of the city of Chernihiv found leaflets in their mailboxes which said, "Ukraine must be liberated from Jewish rule". Two of the 11 investigations were closed for lack of evidence. The rest are ongoing.
