Chairman Hanan Melcer of Central Election Committee has defended his decision to ban cameras at polling places, telling public radio on Tuesday morning, "At the time of voting, the considerations are that they do not want to violate voter privacy in the polling station. Anyone who does this - it is a criminal offense."

Noting that cameras will be allowed with prior approval at the time votes are counted, the Supreme Court justice added, "We have greatly increased our control processes and this will be reflected on election day so anyone who wants to do wrong things should be warned and if he does not heed we will catch him and prosecute. We asked the police not only to maintain order but also to take part in preventing the offenses."
