Audits conducted at the Mahane Yehuda market in Jerusalem saw income tax auditors receive a variety of excuses from businesses, finding that neither the revenue registration procedure nor the business books were conducted as required.
The Tax Authority notes that the varied responses of business owners went from broken cash registers to registering at the end of the day and among others, the auditors heard the following excuses: "The cash register broke on Friday and I called a technician"; "I was just about to write it down"; "I write only at the end of each day"; "I only give receipts to those who ask"; "I requested an exemption and until now I didn't receive it." In all of these cases, business owners were summoned for continued interrogation in the office's assessment department.
In the greater Jerusalem income tax audit, 100 businesses were audited, in which 18% were found recording no revenue as required by law.
