Former Shechem mayor Bassam Al-Shakaa, a target of the Jewish Underground in 1980, passed away on Monday at the age of 89.
Al-Shakaa was a supporter of the Palestine Liberation Organization and critic of the Camp David Accords, who expressed support for the Coastal Highway massacre, according to Israel Defense Forces sources. He served as mayor from 1976-1982. On June 2, 1980, his car blew up as he started it, leading to the amputation of both of his legs.
