Following the mass desecration of Shabbat in the center of the country for public-works projects, Member of Knesset Yisrael Eichler (United Torah Judaism) submitted the Sabbath Wage bill, with the support of other MKs from UTJ and Shas, to cancel the additional high salary payment for work on the Sabbath in the public sector, which in some cases can reach up to four hundred percent.
The bill would exempt life-and-death situations and not apply to the private sector. It cites what it calls the responsibility of a state that declares itself to be the state of the Jewish people.
