A special ceremony was held for about five hours today in the heart of Manhattan, outside the Consulate General of Italy, as names of the 8,000 Italian victims of the Holocaust and those expelled from its territory were read as part of International Holocaust Remembrance Day by Deputy Italian Foreign Minister Emanuela Claudia, Israeli Consul General in New York, Dani Dayan and consuls of various other countries.
Dayan noted, "In the year since the previous Holocaust Memorial Day, Holocaust survivor Mireille Knoll was murdered in Paris and 11 Jews were murdered in Pittsburgh during a Shabbat service. Today we are more experienced than before 80 and 90 years. Today we know that 'never again' means acting now."
