An amendment to the Hours of Work and Rest Law passed by the Knesset came into effect today, declaring that an employer is not entitled to refuse to accept an employee who declares that he is Sabbath-observant and may not force a worker to work on his weekly rest day (Saturday, Sunday or Friday according to the worker's religion).

According to Member of Knesset Miki Zohar (Likud), who sponsored the amendment with MZ Aliza Lavie (Yesh Atid), "The law that is in force today allows every citizen to rest on his weekly rest day, even if he is not religious. There is no more democratic and Jewish law than this. I believe that preserving the Sabbath will bring about the success of the State of Israel."
