Minister of Public Security Gil'ad Erdan announced on Thursday that he opposes the police's request to obtain authority to search the bodies of detainees when they are naked.
Erdan asked Chairman Nissan Slomiansky of the Constitution Law and Justice Committee not to advance the section of the law dealing with this authority. The police wanted to split one section of the law and promote it on a fast track, according to Erdan, without his knowledge. He added, "This is an unusual and severe authority that violates the rights and privacy of detainees, and such authority should only be authorized in very exceptional cases, and when this is necessary in order to prevent the smuggling of measures that endanger the security of policemen or other persons."
