Minister of Transportation Yisrael Katz has ordered the formulation of a national plan for turning Highway 90 into the eastern traffic axis of Israel, which will be called Trans-Eastern Israel.
The highway has recently been the scene of a number of fatal head-on collisions. The plan will include turning the route from a one-lane in each direction to two lanes in each direction, with the possibility of a third lane in each direction from Eilat to the Galilee. Minister Katz announced that he intends to bring the plan to Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu for approval and then to the cabinet.
