The Knesset has approved the first reading of a bill by Transportation Minister Yisrael Katz, requiring all riders of electric bicycles to wear helmets while riding on them, at all ages and on all roads.

The bill will be submitted to the Economics Committee for preparation for the second and third readings. The law now requires all cyclists to wear a helmet only while riding on interurban roads. On urban roads, the wearing of a helmet applies only to cyclists up to the age of 18. The new bill also states that the fine for not wearing a helmet when riding an electric bicycle will be NIS 1,000 instead of NIS 250 today.
