Former prime minister Ehud Barak has defended former prime minister Ehud Olmert against charges of treason, following Olmert's meeting with Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas last Friday in Paris, after which Olmert said Abbas was the only one capable of bringing about the two-state solution between Israel and the PA.

Writing on Twitter, Barak said, "Olmert committed serious crimes, was punished for them and sat in prison. But Olmert is not a traitor, he is a true Zionist patriot, no less than [Prime Minister Binyamin] Netanyahu, who (according to the police,) committed serious offenses, has not yet been punished for them and has not yet been in prison. And after he sits in jail, Heaven forbid, then he will be a traitor? Even from Netanyahu's weaklings it is also permissible to expect a bit of logic. Just saying."
