Two sources close to the family of former Egyptian chief of staff General Sami Anan told Reuters on Monday that he is in very critical condition in a military hospital in a Cairo suburb.

The 70-year-old Anan was detained in January after announcing plans to compete in Egypt's presidential election. He denied army accusations he ran for office without permission, which the army said was a breach of military law. The sources said he was held in a military prison until he suffered a stroke more than two months ago and was moved to the military hospital. They said his health had been improving and that the setback was a surprise.
