Polish-born former ambassador to Poland Shevach Weiss said in an interview with a Polish radio station that the Polish government during World War II, in exile and in Poland itself, had not cooperated with the Nazis or instigated the murder of Jews, as did other European governments in those days. He thus appeared to back off a claim on Israel Defense Forces Radio that "there were cases in which the Polish government-in-exile participated in the murder of Jews."
The 83-year-old former Knesset speaker and chairman of the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial institution in Jerusalem strongly criticized the joint statement by Prime Minister Netanyahu and his Polish counterpart, Mateusz Morawiecki, published last week, which was sharply criticized for reducing the responsibility of many Poles for crimes against Jews during the Holocaust.
