An advanced device for identifying microbes in the blood with new technology, which provides results within a few minutes, has been purchased for the microbiology laboratory at Ziv Medical Center in Safed.
The new MALDI (matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization)-TOF device uses a mass spectrometry method used which is implemented by building a protein profile. Hila Ben Amram, director of clinical microbiology at the Medical Center's laboratories, says "The doctor receives an immediate update that shortens the duration of antibiotic treatment for patients and their hospital stay. Shortening the process makes it easier for workers to deal with other important things."
