Environmental Protection officials have decided to revoke a work permit for a contractor in the Ramat Shlomo section of Jerusalem until a big stone-crushing machine is replaced with a smaller machine. In addition, the distance between the machine and the nearest home will be increased.
Residents of Ramat Shlomo complained about clouds of soot and dust from the machine which has caused breathing difficulties. The machine was required by the Ministry of Environment Protection in order to reduce the transportation of rocks by trucks that cause congestion on roads and soot and polluting smoke. Following a meeting between citizens and the city's Environmental Quality Committee, a tour of the neighborhood revealed that the stone crusher in question was significantly different from what the contractor was authorized to use at the time the work permit was issued.
