The Knesset's Internal Affairs Committee approved Thursday for the first reading the "Givat Amal Law" which imposes on developers who purchase land to compensate the veteran residents.

Member of Knesset Shuli Moalem-Refaeli (Jewish Home), who cosponsored the bill along with Dov Khenin (Joint List) said, "The residents of Givat Amal who were sent by the state to settle there prior to the establishment of the state have been dragged away since 1961. While the percentage of construction given to entrepreneurs has doubled by hundreds of percent, the right of residents to alternative housing has been abandoned, and today we have taken a significant step in redressing this injustice.
