Federal prosecutors in Detroit on Thursday charged former Volkswagen Chief Executive Martin Winterkorn in connection with the scandal over polluting vehicles in the United States.
Winterkorn, who resigned soon after the scandal became public in 2015, is charged with conspiring to mislead regulators about the German automaker's diesel emissions cheating.
