Ezer Mizion's national data base for bone marrow transplants is preparing for a special national emergency bone-marrow screening operation for Ethiopian community members on Tuesday and Wednesday, as part of a wide campaign to save the life of 30-year-old Vorkanesh Ambia, who has dedicated her life to helping the Ethiopian community.
Two months ago, she was was diagnosed with severe leukemia and needs a bone-marrow donation to save her life but no suitable donors have shown up in the database. Dr. Itay Levy explains that the transplant can be performed only when the patient is in remission, adding "Vorkanesh is currently in a remission from the disease, and there is a short window in which the bone marrow can be implanted. If we miss the opportunity and the disease comes back, it will be bad. That's why we race against time. She needs an urgent available donor so we can carry out the transplant." Vorkanesh said, "It's just a simple saliva test that can save me and many more patients from the Ethiopian community in the future."
