Brigadier General Avi Benayahu, who had been the IDF Spokesman at the time, recounted how then-IDF Chief of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi had ordered Western Wall Rabbi Shmuel Rabinovitch to pray for IDF soldiers that night before Israel bombed the Syrian nuclear reactor in 2007.
Benayahu relates that that evening, IDF Spokesperson Oron Liron married Ashekazi's secretary. During the wedding, Chief of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi asked the rabbi of the Western Wall, Rabbi Shmuel Rabinowitz, and instructed him: "Go to the Western Wall and pray for IDF soldiers!"
"What happened?" asked the rabbi. Ashkenazi replied with a smile. "The time has come for you to fulfill orders without asking questions," Benayahu said.
