The Knesset has approved the first reading of a government bill to give the State of Israel the authority to assist women agunot in the world, who are not citizens or residents of the State of Israel.
Today, Jewish women around the world whose husbands refuse to give them a get cannot receive assistance from the State of Israel if they do not have citizenship or residency. The proposal was initiated at the initiative of Member of Knesset Aliza Lavie (Yesh Atid) following a request from the European Conference of Rabbis and was prepared in cooperation with the rabbinical courts, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Justice.
