State seeks delay in implementation of relief in prison overcrowding

On Sunday afternoon, the state filed a petition with the Supreme Court to change the date of the ruling on the minimal living space for every prisoner and detainee.

The court ruled in June that the state must do what is required so that within 18 months the minimum living space for each prisoner will be at least 4 square meters without toilets and shower (or 4.5 square meters, including toilet and shower). The State wishes to determine that the final date for execution of the judgment will be in 2027, in accordance with the decision of the government regarding the upgrading of the prison system. According to industry professionals, about a third of the work can be done by 2019.
