United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres called on the fighting in the Syrian region of Ghouta to end, as recently clashes have left hundreds of civilians dead. Guterres said in a statement that he "is deeply alarmed by the escalating situation in Eastern Ghouta and its devastating impact on civilians."

"I am deeply saddened by the terrible suffering of the civilian population in eastern Ghouta: 400,000 people who live in hell on earth."
