    Government's gender-separate haredi tour-guide course cancelled

Jerusalem District Court Judge Oded Shaham has ruled that holding a training course by the Ministry of Tourism for haredi-religious guides in separate groups for men and women creates "discrimination".

The ruling came in a petition filed by the Israel Women's Network demanding cancellation of the separate courses, claiming that holding them separately "violates the constitutional right to dignity and equality, and contravenes the provisions of the Mandatory Tenders Law and the Prohibition of Discrimination Law." In the opinion of the judge, the ministry failed to prove that there was any real justification for the separation. The state responded by announcing that it intends to publish a new tender for the course, which will not require the operator to conduct studies separating men and women.
