Bnei Brak rabbi against firecrackers

In preparation for the Purim holiday, Rabbi Yitzchok Zilberstein of the Ramat Elchanan neighborhood of Bnei Brak, whose opinion is frequently sought in the Lithuanian yeshiva community, published a clarification on Tuesday that it is forbidden to use explosives such as firecrackers and caps.

Citing a book by Rabbi Chaim Palagi from two hundred years ago, Rabbi Zilberstein said the use of these explosives is prohibited because it is derived from the "customs of the gentiles," and a matter of "not doing as they do." He also cited their potential for causing fear and panic. In his letter, he appealed to parents to use Jewish alternatives, such as fulfilling the commandments of Purim as a way for children to enjoy themselves.
