Salim Zanoun, the chairman of the Palestinian National Council (PNC) who also serves as chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization’s (PLO) Central Council, on Sunday urged the Central Council members who are meeting in Ramallah to take a stand on the future of the Palestinian Authority (PA) and to reexamine the PLO's recognition of Israel.
The PLO never actually recognized Israel. Its former chairman, Yasser Arafat, in 1988 only summarized the language of UN General Assembly Resolution 181 to provide a legal basis for a “Palestinian state”. In addition, the charter of Fatah includes a clause stating the “absolute irrevocable opposition to recognition of Israel as a ‘Jewish state.’”
