Interior Minister Aryeh Deri, chairman of the Sephardic-haredi-religious Shas party, told Radio Kol Hai on Tuesday he did not think the High Court of Justice would invalidate the newly-passed Supermarket Law.

Meretz party Chairwoman Zahava Gal-On has petitioned the court against the law and Mayor Moshe Fadlon of Herzliya says he will challenge it if Deri does not approve a proposed bylaw for businesses in that city to be open on the Jewish Sabbath. Deri also said, "We passed the law not for us, but only for the Jewish character of the state so that a child will know that everything is closed on Shabbat because it is Shabbat. [Prime Minister Binyamin] Netanyahu knows that the vote was intended for one thing: to preserve the status quo and preserve coalition agreements."
