The Modiin City Council has approved an amendment to the municipal bylaws that allows the opening of businesses on the Jewish Sabbath.

The background to the move is the expected final approval of the Supermarkets Law, which is due to be voted in second and third readings next week in the Knesset plenum, which would give discretion to the interior minister regarding the opening of businesses on Shabbat. Earlier this week, the Givatayim city council joined other cities in approving such an amendment ahead of the possible passage of the bill.
