James Alex Fields Jr., the driver accused of barreling a car into a crowd during a protest in Charlottesville, Virginia was charged on Thursday with first-degree murder, a charge that had been upgraded from second-degree murder.
A conviction for second-degree murder carries a maximum sentence of 40 years; first-degree murder carries a penalty of up to life in prison.
