Chief Rabbi David Lau referred to the storm around the words of Deputy Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely and said that we should look at the official numbers of US Jewry.
In an Arutz Sheva interview Rabbi Lau said that in 1945 US Jewry numbered 6 million and despite the fact that there was no Holocaust or terrible war there US Jewry now numbers five million including 700,000 Israelis.
This means that US Jewry is gradually diminishing instead of maintaining natural growth.
Rabbi Lau said that 50% of US Jewry are secular so one cannot state that 90% of them are Reform as that is not true.
