The Knesset's Constitution, Law and Justice Committee discussed the proposed law to integrate the fundamentals of Jewish law into the legal system in Israel. The law would allow the usage of the "fundamentals of Jewish law" as a legitimate source which the court can use in the event of a lacuna in the law, or as a legal parallel.
MK Uri Maklev said that before the law is approved another law is needed to define Jewish law.
Maklev said that "there are many statements and interpretations said around Jewish law which are far from Jewish law. Not every statement is true interpretation. It must be clearly defined who has the right to interpret Jewish law and which interpretation is acceptable. They interpret Jewish law according to their outlook."
