Gal Mekel, who followed Omri Casspi to the National Basketball Association in North America, is taking Casspi's place as captain of Israel's national basketball team, which opens play this weekend in qualifying play for the 2019 World Championship in Japan.
Because the tournament conflicts with the NBA season, Casspi will not be available for the preliminary rounds.
