Study: Weasels with damaged spines regain mobility

A new and trailblazing study in the Technion has succeeded in restoring mobility to paralyzed weasels.

Prof. Shulamit Levenberg, the leader of the research effort, coordinated with two Tel Aviv labs and investigated the ability of certain cells to restore spinal tissue. Cells taken from the animals' gums were used to create new tissue which was implanted into a bisected spine and the animals in many cases managed to regain mobility and even walk.

Levenberg said that more steps would be needed before trials could be made on humans.
