Gabbay is correct, we have a difficult problem'

Labor party leader Avi Gabbay raised a storm recently when he repeated Netanyahu's claim 20 years ago that "the Left has forgotten what it means to be Jewish.'

Eran Baruch, the director of the Binah organization for secular Judaism, concurs with Gabbay and says that "we have a big problem. Large sectors of the secular community in Israel feel that Judaism is of no interest to them, there is a lot of opposition and a lot of ignorance about this subject."

Baruch added that even parts of the religious public have forgotten what it means to be a Jew, which is not just ritual but also a religion of "charity and loving kindness, stipends and disability pensions."
