The coalition decided on Wednesday to change the wording of the nationality law, in order to allow it to be approved in a first reading in the Knesset plenum, according to a Thursday-morning report by Haaretz.

Under the change, requested by the Kulanu party, the democratic regime in Israel will not be subordinated to the Jewish identity of the state. Said subordination was one of the main motives for law, with the aim of influencing Supreme Court rulings in places where Jewish rights and democratic values clash.

Following the change, the coalition is expected to pass the first reading on December 11, along with a bill granting incumbent Knesset members help in financing primary elections. The two laws require a majority of at least 61 supporters, so Coalition Chairman David Bitan and Cabinet Secretary Tzachi Braverman have announced a ban on Knesset members and ministers going abroad that day in order to prevent the measures from being defeated.
