Tel Aviv mayor Ron Huldai responded Thursday to the Supreme Court decision allowing stores to open in Tel Aviv on Shabbat.

Huldai said that "the city was secular and will remain secular. The balanced decision of the Supreme Court led by Chief Justice Naor maintains the social value of Shabbat as a day of rest and also provides a response and allows the required services for residents of the city on their day of rest and recreation.

"Just as the Bnei Brak municipality closes on Shabbat what is permitted in the rest of the country, it is right to respect the authority of the Tel Aviv municipality to establish the character of Shabbat in its streets."
