The director of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom, announced that he would reconsider the appointment of Zimbabwe president Robert Mugabe as a good-will ambassador.

Adhanom wrote on his Twitter account that he "understands the concerns" of those who criticized the appointment of Mugabe, who has for a long period faced United States sanctions over his government’s human rights violations.

Iain Levine, program director at Human Rights Watch, wrote on Twitter that, “Given Mugabe’s appalling human rights record, calling him a goodwill ambassador for anything embarrasses WHO and Doctor Tedros.”
