Hurricane Maria was upgraded from a tropical storm into a Category 1 hurricane on Sunday as it takes aim at the Caribbean islands.
As of Sunday afternoon (local time), Maria was about 140 miles (225 kilometers) east to northeast of Barbados, according to the National Hurricane Center.
