Smuggling of 400 kg of tobacco from PA prevented

The Tax Authority reports that police, soldiers and customs inspectors stationed at the Ma'aleh Adumim checkpoint thwarted an attempt to smuggle 400 kilograms of tobacco into Israel last week.

The tobacco was on a truck from the Palestinian Authority which also contained some NIS 200,000 worth of merchandise without proper documentation. The driver said the tobacco was to be used as a padding for chickens to prevent eggs from breaking. The tobacco was sent for destruction and the rest of the merchandise was returned to the PA. The investigation against the involved parties continues.
