Following Friday's severe pollution incident in Nahal Ashalim, the Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel, at the initiative of Knesset members Tali Ploskov (all of us), Yael Cohen Paran (Zionist Union) Dov Khenin (Joint List) and Moshe Gafni (United Torah Judaism) has submitted a bill to enable filing of civil suits for damage to protected natural resources.
Under the bill a court will be able to determine compensation for the damage caused to nature and the environment, which will be dedicated to conservation purposes. Current law does not define damage to nature or natural areas, as an environmental hazard and therefore citizens and public bodies cannot file claims for this damage.
