(JTA) — Archaeologists in the Polish city of Wroclaw have found the foundations of the New Synagogue, the second largest synagogue in pre-war Germany, which was destroyed during Kristallnacht, or Night of the Broken Glass, in November 1938. At present, on the site where the synagogue sat, stands a monument.

Archaeologists uncovered the foundations and fragments of the floor at the former entrance to the synagogue. The Bente Kahan Foundation wants the place to be appropriately commemorated before next year’s 80th anniversary of Kristallnacht.
