A memorandum of a government bill on conversion, published Wednesday evening at the initiative of the Ministry of the Interior, determines that conversion in Israel will be recognized only if conducted through the state conversion system.
The bill seeks to nullify a Supreme Court ruling issued a little over a year ago, which determined that private Orthodox conversions performed in Israel would also be recognized in the matter of the Law of Return. However, the High Court justices conditioned the recognition of conversions for the Law of Return on the court being known to belong to a recognized community.
