Member of Knesset Ayelet Nahmias-Verbin (Zionist Union) and others filed a petition with the Supreme Court on Monday against the Ministry of Education, Minister of Education Naftali Bennett and the Director General of the Ministry, requesting an interim order that will freeze the implementation of Bennett's decision to change the students' vacation for the Lag Baomer observance from next Sunday to next Monday.
The change was ordered in an attempt to minimize Sabbath desecration by keeping students from staying up all night at bonfires possibly started before the end of the Sabbath. Petitioners claim that there were flaws in the process in which the decision was made by the minister. MK Nahmias-Verbin said, "It's a pity we had to file a petition, because I believe that this is the last tool to be used, but after two years of intensive efforts to influence the vacations schedule, and the total lack of response from the Education Ministry, we had no choice but to turn to the High Court of Justice."
