For the second straight day, representatives of the haredi-religious parties are meeting with Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu on the erosion of the status quo regarding the Sabbath in the public sphere.
Interior Minister and Shas party chairman Aryeh Deri is demanding that he be given the authority to enforce the municipal bylaws on the subject, which are currently in the hands of Minister of Labor and Social Affairs Haim Katz from Netanyahu's Likud party, which opposes the transfer. Knesset Finance Committee Chairman Moshe Gafni is demanding that legislation be enacted to uproot the Supreme Court ruling that allowed the partial opening of supermarkets in Tel Aviv. Other coalition factions also find it hard to agree to this demand.
