European Union leaders on Saturday at a Belgium summit discussing the EU's plan for negotiating Brexit promised Northern Ireland acceptance into the EU if it unites with the Republic of Ireland.
If Northern Ireland does unite with the Republic of Ireland, it would follow the precedent set by East Germany in 1990, when it united with EU member state Germany and received automatic acceptance into the EU.
