Member of Knesset Elazar Stern (Yesh Atid) is troubled by the future of Holocaust remembrance. Interviewed by Arutz Sheva, he asked, "What will happen to Holocaust remembrance when there are no more survivors?"
The former military education and personnel chief said, "The Jewish people can not survive without a legacy and without a memory - and there is no doubt that the Holocaust is part of that. The culture of memory in the present era is under threat. We know that a religious protocol is easier to remember. We remember Tisha B'Av, Pesach and Sukkot. But if there is no religious protocol, how do we know that in another 200 years we will not have a barbecue on Holocaust Day? I have no happy ending to this challenge."
Stern noted, "There was an attempt to connect Holocaust Remembrance Day with Tisha B'Av - and it fell because it came out during the summer vacation. We have to be aware of this challenge and every generation must see itself as if it had come out of Auschwitz. And now to see what religious content we can make to meet the challenge of Holocaust remembrance the day after."
