Chief Rabbi Yisrael Meir Lau of Tel Aviv-Jaffa expressed regret Thursday at Wednesday's Supreme Court decision to open supermarkets in Tel Aviv on Saturday.
Interviewed by Kol Yisrael government radio, the former chief rabbi of Israel said, "The opening of the supermarkets gives us the feeling that we are strangers in our [own] city. You do not know Tel Aviv. There are dozens of religious schools in the city, and it is not as secular a city as it appears." The rabbi added that the opening of supermarkets in Tel Aviv on Saturday was made possible because criminals violated municipal bylaws.
