The Chief Rabbi of Israel, Rabbi David Lau, responded on Wednesday evening to the Supreme Court ruling allowing for businesses in Tel Aviv to operate on the Sabbath.
"It was with great pain that I heard about the Supreme Court ruling that could lead to the trampling of the sanctity of the Sabbath in the public sphere in the land of Israel. The Sabbath is the source of the strength of the Jewish people, and it has preserved the identity of our people and constitutes an alliance between the people of Israel and God,” said Rabbi Lau.
"I call upon the legislative bodies to act, as soon as possible, to amend the law that will allow the continuation of the sanctification of the Sabbath in all the cities of Israel," he added.
