The Institute of Torah and the Land of Israel (Machon Hatorah veHaaretz) is recommending that people peel garlic cloves and wash them under a stream of water.

The recommendation follows tests carried out in recent weeks at the institute's laboratory show that there is a high level of contamination due to the presence of various kinds of spiders and other insects in both dry and fresh garlic. Rabbi Yehuda Amichai, the head of the institute's halachic department, says that although insect infestations are higher in dry garlic, peeling and washing should be done in both.
