Rabbi Micha Halevi, chairman of the committee to examine the subject of kashrut certification, expressed opposition on Tuesday morning, to privatization of the certification process. Commenting on a Supreme Court hearing on a Reform Movement petition against what it calls the Chief Rabbinate's monopoly on kashrut certification, the Chief Rabbi of Petach Tikva explained, "Privatization will cause various kinds of unkosher meat to be sold in the country, the general public will fail [the test] and the basic level of kashrut will fall dramatically."
Rabbi Halevi concluded, "All this does not mean there's nothing to fix efficiently in the rabbinate's kashrut system, and therefore the rabbinate has been working for months to publish a report and an outline for improving and streamlining the rabbinate's kashrut system."
